The new preview m23Shiver 0.4.8-pre5 of the next m23 series is available for download. This release has go an update script, that lets you update your currently installed m23 version to the version contained on the m23 server installation CD. The german + english manuals have been finished and some help files were added to the MDK menue system. And for the first time there is a client installation CD.


The important enhancements are

• Added a script for updating the installed m23 version with the version contained on the CD.


• Completed help files of the MDK menue system.


• Engish translation of the manual.


• khtml2png: Has been mostly rewritten, because KDE 3.2 now uses an optimisation that doesn't draw widgets that aren't visible. With the old tool it is impossible to make screenshots bigger than the screen. The new tool scrolls the content of the HTML page and makes different screenshots that are appended to one image.


• Generation of client boot CDs, that can be used to install clients without bootrom or floppy drive.


• MAC address is shown during client startup


• Error message, if an error occurs while updating the package information.


• Now only sources lists are shown that belong to the distribution.


• Better layout of the german manual.

The only important change in m23shiver 0.4.8-pre4 is the bugfix for the m23 server installer, that had to be done manually in the previous version. This release may interesting for you only, if you want to install a new m23 server.

The new preview m23Shiver 0.4.8-pre3 of the next m23 series is available for download. This version gives you the possibillity to install Debian/Woody with extra sources for KDE3.2 and OpenOffice. In this release there were fixed many little bugs that have been unsolved before.

Hint
There is a little problem with the DHCP server. In the file /m23/dhcp/dhcpd.conf is an additional "\" at the end of the line containing "option routers". You have to remove the "\" after ";" to solve this problem. Please use an editor to remove this character e.g. on the console you can use nano:

nano /m23/dhcp/dhcpd.conf
Edit and save with Ctrl+X

Ok, that's enough about this error.

The important enhancements are

• Selection of the Debian distribution (Woody, Sarge, Sid)
• Kernel selection
• Rescue system: Clients can be booted over the network and give you a console to work on the client directly. This can be useful for recovery purposes.
• A lot of changes to make Debian/Woody install (e.g. additional packages for hardware detection, initscripts and exchange of really old software).
• Lots of new MDK menues to control the MDK. All functions can be accessed thru the menues.
• Automatic generation of the manual from the text of the online help with screenshots of the administration interface. Now it is possible with (less work) to generate manuals for different languages.
• New message system, that is used to send status information from the client to the server.
• phpMyAdmin was updated to 2.5.6
• Script for generation of static Knoppix DEB packages (hwsetup, ddcxinfo)
• Bugfixes ;)

The new preview m23Shiver 0.4.8-pre2 of the next m23 series is available for download. This release should run normaly and includes most of the planed features.

The important enhancements are

• Clientinstallation without static image, but with deboostrap. It will be possible to install the different Debian versions (woody,sid,sarge). In this preview SID/unstable is hardcoded.


• Gnome2 can be installed as alternative desktop.


• Kernel 2.4.25 is used for client installation.


• BusyBox 1.00-pre7 (for all functions but init) is used for the netbootimage.


• English translation of the new helptexts.


• Preview of package installation/deinstallation. So you are able to check if there will be any problems and how much disk space will be consumed/freed.


• It is possible to define option pages for Debian packages, that show additional parameters, that can be used before and/or after the installation of a package. E.g. you can create an option page for the samba package that lets you enter the workgroupname etc.


• Update of the development guide


• Creation, deletion and editing of package source lists, that define where the client can fetch the software packages from.

We did it again: The release candidate 3 is ready for download now!

There were more changes as wanted, but they were needed to make the m23 development more easy. And of course we fixed a lot of bugs. Now you can see the current status of the m23 development on the m23 project page in a so called changelog. You can find it in the menu on the right side.

- Monitor information of the client is detected by DDC to select the refresh rate
- Corretions of the english translation
- Clientbootimages contain 3Com network drivers
- Knoppix DEB packages are used for hardware detection verwendet
- Client proxy settings are stored apt.conf
- Countless bugfixes are marked with "cha" in the changelog
