hallo,

By adding some laptops to the m23 system the client gets network and starts installing but loses his network over and over again.
Changing the network card model is difficult beacuse its a laptop.
What would you suggest?
I've tried everything Sad

thanks in advance

Hallo!

If you've really tried everything, then we won't be able to help you Confused

No, seriously, could you tell us what you tried so we don't suggest things you already did? Wink
(like checking network cables, trying the same on another machine with another nw-card,...)

A web search told us that there may be problems caused by the kernel module for this specific network card on Ubuntu.
Did you try to install Ubuntu on the laptops? Which version? Is there a BIOS option in the laptop firmware which is called something like 'deep sleep' (energy saving)?

I have nearly the same problem with this network card. I am currently trying to setup a Dell vostro 1520 with a Realtek 8168 as a m23 client.

If I boot the laptop over PXE the system starts fine but then displays the following to me: [screen has terminated]. After activating the console, this is a part of the dmesg output:

Code:

r8169 ... eth0: unable to load firmware patch rtl_nic/rtl8168d-1.fw (-2)
r8169 ... eth0: link down
r8169 ... eth0: link up

Please help me with fixing this problem and let me know if you need more information.

Thanks FillFeile

Thank you, FillFeile for concretizing the problem.

So now we know that it is the m23 netboot image which seems not to contain the firmware for you network card.

Unfortunately, there is not much you can do about this if you want to do a network boot, we will have to put the necessary firmware into the netboot image.
This will be difficult, as there are a lot of different network card requiring different drivers, although they all have the same name / number ...
We will look into this more closely next week.

Could you meanwhile tell us which m23 you are using?

If you need an ad hoc solution, you can only install the distro without m23 and then integrate it...

Note to self: Look here for solution help: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=657544

Sorry Maren, maybe I was a bit too fast with my complain.

Our problem was the result of a buggy DHCP setup. After fixing this, all works fine.

Thank you for your answer anyway.

Mmmh. Strange error message for this kind of problem - but I'm happy to hear it's working now!
